November 2009

Hi All,

The cruise to Joe’s Gizzard City had a low turnout. But those who ventured to this fine eating establishment have had their
cholesterol checked and the appropriate action taken place. Catch up with Jim Rees to get his levels.

The weather for our fall color/Erwin’s Orchard cruise was a little on the cool-cloudy-rainy side. Thanks to those who braved a 1 ˝ hour drive. We ventured through Northville, Plymouth, then headed west around Whitmore Lake, Silver Lake – not too many boaters but a very scenic drive to enjoy some of the best donuts and cider around.

At the October meeting we had a great dinner catered in from Szegedis. The turn out was great. Please let the new Social Director know if you enjoyed this type of activity, as it can be continued. If interested in the position speak with Bruce.

The program for the October meeting was a huge success. The Pratt & Miller team was here with a GT-1 car. An informative presentation with a great Q & A. Thanks to Gary Claudio for arranging this program. Contact Gary if you have ideas or contacts for upcoming meetings.

UPCOMING

October 2009

Our cruise to the Lexington A & W turned out to be a great ride. The weather couldn’t have been better. Along the water and lakes the scenery was fantastic. We were met at the A & W by a couple of other members for an excellent burger and root beer floats. We then traveled to Bunny’s for some frozen custard. From chocolate to an unusual black raspberry/vanilla twist, a great mom and pop operation in the area.

If you missed the September meeting, you missed an opportunity for a great meal. At the meeting we had dinner catered in by Polish Village Café from Hamtramck. All enjoyed and feasted on city chicken, stuffed cabbage and pierogi’s   with cucumbers and sour cream. What a great dinner. Thanks to Polish Village  Café for a great dinner and service. We have another vendor planned for October – news is later in article.

The 2008 Awards Banquet is over. If you missed it, it was a great ending to the celebration of the club’s 50th Anniversary and 2008. Thanks go out to Pat Jutras for organizing a great time. Other members whom assisted with the set  up are Rodney Slusher, Jan VanMaden, Bruce and Mary Wentzel and Scott Kempf whom supplied the tunes for the evening. Among the many Awards that were presented, Mary Wentzel was presented the President’s Award form Mark Eissler and the Watson Family presented the Ken Watson Most Valuable Member Award to Chris Scarfeo. Congratulations to all.   Paul Yurska won the raffle for the RidemakerZ Corvette, Bob Palmer had the wining bid  for the 50th Anniversary banner and Mary Wentzel out bided Bruce for a RidemakerZ Corvette. All in all for the evening we raised $501.00 for ALS. Thanks to everyone. We heard from Dave Hill and Harlan Charles as our special guests as they shared their past experiences and offered their insight of the Corvette for the years ahead. Thanks go out those that donated door prizes it is very much appreciated.

An update from Russ Craighead
In honor of Ken Watson, our support of the ALS Association began soon after his passing as a $250 goal.  Tonight, as ALSA closes it books for the 2008 fiscal year, our combined contributions totaled $2,081.  This is more than 800% of the original goal!

This success is a tribute to your generosity, especially during a time of economic distress throughout our state and our country.  Moreover, it is a tribute to the legacy of an exceptional man, Ken Watson.

Looking forward to 2009, CCM leaders have expressed interest in upping the ante by contributing proceeds of the Corvette Encounter raffle to Ken's Friends and the fight against ALS.  We're working with the ALS Association to make this happen.

To all of you, THANKS for your support as we honor Ken and continue the fight against the affliction that claimed him.

Warm regards,
Russ

  1. Our Annual Dinner Evening took us to Jack‘s on the Waterfront in St. Clair Shores. I didn’t know that you can cross over I-96 that many time in a short distance. They had put together a great cruise and enjoyed an excellent meal at the Tap Room. Thanks for Dave Krom to Chair the Concours and Joe and Jennifer for their efforts in putting together an excellent cruise route.

Jim Rees answered the question correctly – Carol Glowacki had  parked her C5 Blue convertible on the

display pad out in front of the Heritage Center. Jim you will receive your prize the next time we get

together.

The 50th Celebration Weekend is behind us. And what a full weekend of activity. On Friday night we had dinner at the Moose Preserve on Woodward in Bloomfield Hills. With 46 current and past members of CCM from all parts of the USA. We were lucky to have a few members from 1958 in attendance. All had a great meal and the service was excellent. Our door prize winner for this activity was Carol Clemens a very active original member from 1958 who made the trip from North Carolina with Phyllis Henning another active member from 1958. Congrats. From here, we made an attempt to cruise Woodward but the rain at that time was horizontal. Check with Jim Rees and his cleanup once the weather let up. Some of us cruised Woodward and ended up at Ray’s Ice Cream in Royal Oak for a little scoop of ice cream. Please note that there is no such item listed on the menu as a small scoop at Ray’s. We ordered our favorite flavors and had a great time sharing past CCM experiences.

Saturday morning we had a show up breakfast at Athen’s Coney Island in Royal Oak, with a cruise to the Auto Zone where they have an auto show every Saturday morning. The weather during the night and earlier dampened the turnout. But for those who showed up we enjoyed a great breakfast and John Collins was our door prize winner.

The evening was clear and the weather very warm as a fantastic number of Corvettes pulled up to the GM Heritage Center facility.  After moving through a brief check in at registration and determining which door prize to deposit your raffle tickets in, monies raised were for the Children’s Leukemia foundation (more later on this). We had tables set up with past memorabilia and Trophy table with some of CCM’s important ones. We then were able to gaze upon many special Corvettes that were brought in especially for our celebration and the many other important cars that GM has produced in the past, either concepts or production models. We had produced a pictorial slide show that ran on the big screen with lots of past memories recalled by many throughout the evening. This will be available for purchase along with photos from the celebration weekend. Dave Krom is heading up this project – more info to follow on the web site.  Our MC for the night, Mark Eissler, current CCM President, introduced our guests Gary and Debbie Stanford, Harlan Charles, Chris and Collen Warren and welcomed current and past members. The evening was set with background music, friends old and new and a meal catered form Forte who did a great job throughout the night. During dinner we passed out table door prizes for the oldest member and who had the oldest Corvette.  They received either a 50th Anniversary clock or a Corvette Die cast engine. The winners were:

Pat Pierson                    Gloria McIntosh                 Damian Gavie
George Prentice             Phyliss Henning                 Ed Gavie
Carol Glowacki              Randy Murray                    Bob Nynek
Rick Cronin                   John Phillippe                      Rose Case
Paul Young                    Fred King                           Don Sak
Rick Parent                   Jim Keegan                        Keith Bauman
Frank Suvoy                  Jack Bach                           Ray Horenstein
Bill Mashinter               Hal Priner                          Chuch Fast
Careen Evans                Jim Mclaughlin                  Jim Wendte
John Collins                   Bob Oleszkiewicz                Art Fulkerson
Gary Stanford               Werner Meier                     Roy Bryans
Bob Jutras                     Ken Watson                        Bob Sawyer

More excitement was to come as we prepared to announce the winners of the individual door prizes with all of the proceeds donated to the Children’s Leukemia Foundation $480 was raised through the purchase of additional raffle tickets. Thank You. The winners were:

Cathy Bryans                Barb Mynek             Roy Thayer
Bill Weidendorf             Nicole Watson          Werner Meier
Jan Skiles                      Agnes Hutnick          Jill McCririe

Congratulations go to Gordon McCann as he was the winner of the Grand Prize drawing of the Bondurant Driving School Experience. This was donated by Gary Claudio head of the Corvette marketing team at GM.

The highlight of the evening was a special item that was donated to the club to be auctioned off. The proceeds going to our charity, the Children’s Leukemia Foundation. A very special thanks goes to the Gavie’s who donated the hat that was signed by the three chief engineers of the Corvette: Zora Arkus-Duntov, Dave Hill and Dave McLellan. The auction was chaired by our resident auctioneer John Firment who did a great job of handling the bidding.  It started out with many bidding, but soon there were 2 people, Carol Glowacki and Debbie Stanford bidding and the excitement was building as the amount approached $300. At this time neither were going to give up and the bidding surpassed $1,000, the room was quiet as Debbie Stanford made the winning bid of $1,350. Plenty of excitement and a great amount raised for the Children’s Leukemia Foundation. A special thanks to our final two bidders. We were able to enjoy the rest of the evening mingling with friends and viewing the great collection of cars at the GM Heritage Center.

Sunday brought out the sun and the humidity, a great day for a picnic. As we gathered at Maybury State Park for the Annual Picnic we had plenty of great food for our pot luck, as our resident cook Bob Jutras fired up the grill. We lined up for brats and hot dogs and enjoyed a fantastic array of salads and goodies to quench our appetite. The kids had fun with all of the games, the adults caught up the news with old members. We did have a great display of Corvettes in the lot, thanks to all who drove their car out. Thanks to Pat and Bob Jutras, Diane and Ken Watson, Dave Krom and Ted Hou for their efforts to organize a great picnic.

 would like to thank the following for their help and assistance with the 50th Celebration, without their work it would not have been as great of a celebration!

Thanks for to all for their participation and have a great remainder of the year celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the Corvette Club of Michigan.  The celebration is not over or has it ended – PARTICIPATE IN THE UPCOMING EVENTS BOTH SOCIAL & COMPETITION, for the rest of the year.  You can come out and be a spectator or earn worker points at competition events which count towards our overall point standings, see Chris Scafero. We always like to have as many as possible participate in social activities, check your calendar and mark the dates.

There was a Corvette parked out in front of the GM Heritage center as you entered the parking lot. I have a special door prize which I will award to the first person who can identify the year and the owners of this car. Hint: They are a club member. I will award it at an upcoming membership meeting.  Respond via email wilsonvette @yahoo.com.

Again thanks to all.  Kerry Hlady,   Social Director

Limited space is available - 18 spots
Friday night after business close at 5pm
Saturday all day

As in the past it will be a cruising lot you’ll be able to got out and cruise if you like.

Our cruise to Erwin’s Apple Orchard was a sweet success. We had several cars meet in Northville where we had a best of cruise contest. After the ballots were cast using the secret communication of tabulation, the winners are: The Palmer’s Atomic Orange convertible was third – appropriate for the season, The Fast’s with their yellow Z06 were second - very bright and the Grand Prize went to the Watson’s and their classic Blue 67 convertible. Congrats to all and thanks to everyone for attending. We enjoyed a scenic drive heading west on 7 mile to Pontiac Trail, where we then headed north through South Lyon and onto Erwin’s Orchards. The donuts were great as well as the cider. They have a nice set up for families with many activities for the kids from a trike track, hay stack maze, hay rides through the orchard and plenty of moon walks. We were able to gather together and enjoy the atmosphere along with our guests, the bee’s, who made their presence know.  If you see Jim Rees ask him about the 3 ˝ pound apple pie he bought there.

Ticket to Ride -  July 14  Auburn/Cord/Dusenberg Museum in Auburn Indiana.  Departing from Canton, we headed out for a great cruise on a day with fantastic weather. The view of many Corvettes cruising through the country side of Michigan, Ohio and Indiana is great site. Our caravan stopped work on a roof along the way as all of the workers stopped to gaze at what flew by them. Arriving at the museum we toured the facility which has fantastic examples of Auburns, Cord and Dusenbergs. Elegance and ambiance ruled these creations. The weight, length, massive lights and paint come together as you can imagine what it took to get them going down the road. They had plenty of displacement but were low in horsepower. The power was outside in the parking lot in those shiny Corvettes. Lunch was at Mad Anthony’s Micro brew where we enjoyed a leisurely lunch. Thanks to all who came along, look forward to seeing you at our next Ticket to Ride event.

Auto Cross – July 22. What a hot day for an Auto X. But is great for cruising from Les Stanford to the event. After a brief meeting we headed for the Hamtramck Lot. Bob Palmer won our People’s Choice Award as he showed up in a new 07 Atomic Orange Metallic. We had time to scope out the action and to assist as volunteers with the event. Plan to attend our next Auto X cruise on Aug 19.

Aug 5 Annual Picnic and Concurs – The weather was not the best, you could say the worst. As we had a little turn out for this event. Those that attended had an opportunity to do some bench racing and catch up. Thanks to Pat Jutras and  Diane Watson  for organizing this event.

New

Two Ticket to Ride events have been added:

Sept 22   Ticket to Ride to Hickory Corners, Gilmore Auto Museum near Battle Creek Flyer and info to follow via email. Contact Jim Rees as he is the leader for this event.

Oct 6   Ticket to Ride to Frankenmuth for Zenders Famous chicken dinner, Flyer and info to follow via email. Contact Carol Glowacki as she is the leader for this event.

Ticket 2 Ride - Oberhaus Museum and Sauder Village. The day was right for a cruise to Ohio. As we left our meeting spot (8 Corvettes) heading down Michigan Ave, we drew a few looks and thumbs up from the many we passed. It was an excellent route with the appropriate stops. Arriving in Archibald at the Oberhaus Museum we were given the red carpet treatment with our host Mr. Oberhaus himself. As he guided us through his collection of cars, antiques, machinery and such. The Cadillac’s which were mostly convertibles; he had one for every year. After touring the facility we headed to Sauder Village for lunch and leisurely walk around the grounds which are set up like a mini Greenfield Village with historians in the buildings sharing the story of each location. Some were functional with workers demonstrating the trade of the era of early settlers.  If you have the opportunity to go down there and visit it is a nice trip.  Thanks to Mark and Kaye Campagnoli for hosting this event.

On June 27 for our regular membership meeting we headed out to Northville to Rocky’s for an enjoyable dinner. Well the dinner was excellent, the weather – rain, Hines Dr being closed - rain and the construction and the gas main break at our meeting site, did not stop us form having 40 people at the restaurant having a great time. As for our door prize winners, Bob House’s car will look shiner now as he won some detail spray. The big winners of the night were the Firments, John won some gas additive and Marty won a small block, Congrats. Thanks for everyone for coming out.

July 10 The Blood Drive organized by Keith Tappan was a success as we were able to meet the number with club members and the help of the Novi Jaycees. Thanks to all that came out and donated for this special cause. Thanks to Keith for pulling this together..

Hi All,  Thanks to Ted Hou for leading our first cruise in the Ticket to Ride series. Remember to get you’re your ticket punched at these events to be eligible for a special drawing at the banquet. Tickets available at event.  Here is Ted’s report.

We started from Blockbuster/Farmer Jack Parking in Hartland, MI lot under cloudy skies with 11 cars. As we headed toward Okemos, we were met with rain showers. However, as we approach CCCC's event, the sky turned blue.  At the CCCC event, where they had over 60 cars, we spent about 1.5 hours looking at very CLEAN vettes. They also had a 'Blessing of the Vettes' and if you were standing around...you got blessed too. We joked that we already had holy water sprinkled on us when we drove thru the rain showers. At 1pm,
we departed for Rosie's Diner, having picked up another CCM member and 4 Western Mich Club members who were going to caravan with us part of the way. So 16 vettes left the parking lot. I think it was a nice sight for onlookers. The driving route was easy and fairly straight and at times, we were led by metal cars that did not exceed the speed limit. As we drove past Grattan, the group turned north on Wabasis road, where we drove at a "very brisk" pace on this winding roller coaster road. Once we arrived at  Rosie's, everyone was smiling and ready to chow down. It was a good trip and a good start to this year's Ticket to Ride season. Join us for the next two events, Oberhaus Museum and Auburn Cord Museum.

Coming Up:

June 23  Ticket to Ride to Oberhaus Enterprises in Archibold Ohio. Come out and enjoy a great cruise through the countryside in Michigan and Ohio. Contact Mark Campagnoli at 313 562 8428 to sign up for this event or to get more info.

June 27 The June’s regular membership meeting is an annual cruise event. This year we will be cruising to Rocky’s of Northville, via Hines Dr. We will meet at Michigan and Military in Dearborn, south west corner in front of Michaels Arts and Crafts store  at 5:30; depart at 5:45 for a leisurely cruise to the restaurant. I need to know if you are planning to attend so that I can let Rocky’s know how many to expect. Kerry 734 502 7103

March 2007

The 2006 Awards Banquet was a smashing success. Thanks to Pat Jutras and those that assisted with organizing a great evening. It was nice to catch up with friends and to check out the 07 Corvette that Les Stanford had on display in the banquet room. We’re still working on a plan to include it as one of our door prizes. Thanks to those that donated Door Prizes, your assistance is greatly appreciated.

Now on to 2007, a calendar of events has been planned.  TICKET TO RIDE events, just like the popular Passport Tours from last year you’ll get a ticket validated prior to leaving – save the ticket for the other events and at the banquet there will be a special door prize. Talk to Jeanette Ek about the prize, as she was the winner from the Passport Tours. For 2007 we have planned longer day trips to special destinations.

On our Corvette only Autocross dates, July 22 and Aug 19, we will have a cruise to the Hamtramack Lot, starting at Les Stanford as our meeting place. Upon arrival we will have a Peoples Choice Award and enjoy the racing.

Over Labor Day weekend Joe Thomas will be heading to Bowling Green for the festivities. Also Mary Wentzel will be heading up the Corvette Corral at the ALMS Race that will be on Belle Isle, she is in need of volunteers to help out.

The competition committee has many events planned, the Autocrosses, 3 Rallyes with different themes and Drag nights at Milan. Check out the schedule to plan your participation.

February 2007

We are planning a full calendar of events to take place in 2007. But first we need to wrap up 2006.

Our annual Awards Banquet  January 20th, 2007 at Laurel Manor, 39000 Schoolcraft in Livonia.  6 pm Cocktails, Dinner to follow.  Come out and enjoy a great evening of celebration.

On Dec 2nd we went to Professor Motors and brought back old memories of slot car racing. After practice laps, time trials we were ready for the feature race. We all had a great time and enjoyed a great dinner afterward. Check out the pictures on the web site.

For 2007, in the planning stages are TC’s Themed Cruises, which will be to destinations and will be the better part of a full day. Also in the works we are  getting locations set for casual meeting sites  where we can  cruise to meet for breakfast for those who like to start their day early and Sunday afternoon  Ice Cream. We will have locations in the North, East, West and South areas of the metro area. These will casual meeting spots to cruise to, do some bench racing, hang out and enjoy the day. With all of the big Cruise events happening, Telegraph, Gratiot and Downriver if someone  has a connection to secure an area for us to meet on those days, lets see if  we can make it happen. Woodward DreamCruise is set.  Suggestions are always welcomed.

We need your email addresses to make sure we can communicate updates.

Plans for the 50th celebration will be gearing up, thanks to those that have volunteered assist with it.

Thanks to all that helped make our 2006 events a success. Look forward to a great cruising 2007. Thanks, Kerry

December 2006

The Annual Banquet is approaching on January 20th 2007. We are in need of donations for door prizes, contact myself or Pat Jutras or any board member.

In 2008, CCM will celebrate its 50th Birthday.  It is time to start planning events for the year.  We have a few people who have agreed to help out, but more are needed. What a great event to celebrate. We want your input, be a part of history and join the committee.  Contact  Kerry 734 502 7103.

I have been sending out email updates for events and Corvette related news items.  These are short and sweet as I keep it to one page - a great way to be reminded of activities and updates. On my list I have about 1/2 of the club member’s addresses.  I would like to have a complete roster. If you have not yet received one send me an e-mail so that you can be included. Keep the emails coming, appreciate it.

Our first winter activity is going to take place on Dec 2  Saturday at 5 pm.   That would be slot car racing. So look in your attic, garage or the place where you store your antiques.  See Flyer here.

If you have an idea for a winter activity, contact me. Thanks for your help.

As a winter activity, I was thinking about doing some slot car racing as there are a few facilities that have resurrected, restored and built new tracks. This would be easier on the body and take the weight disadvantage away compared to go- kart racing.  This is something that we can arrange in a short time frame via e-mail communication.

If you have an idea for a winter activity, contact me. Thanks for your help.

September 2006

July 16th   Bowtie and Blue Oval Gathering

A great start to a cruise down Hines Drive starting in Dearborn and heading to the Deadwood Grill via Hines Dr. I was a little tense waiting to see the final tally of cars as we were setting up. Thanks for everyone’s enthusiasm and support as the Bowtie’s crushed the Blue Oval  22 to 16. We also got them in the horsepower dept. to. Joe Thomas made the trip from his home in Okemos in record time to make the start, Carl Ek joined the cruise in progress.  Russ Craig made sure that we had more than enough Corvettes as he was able borrow one from work for the weekend.  Again thanks for the effort and support. Since this was a Poker Tour as well, we picked up cards at stops along the route which were hosted by Mark and Kaye Campagnoli,. The winning hand for our poker hand was a flush and was won by a member of the Mustang Club. The Mustang club voted on the Corvettes for peoples choice and was won by Ken and Diane Watson’s blue 67. It was fantastic view to see 38 classics cruise along Hines Dr. The Deadwood Grill did a great job of handling our large group and a special birthday. Thanks to Mark and Kaye Campagnoli for their help.

July 29th

On July 29th we met at Fox Hills Golf in Plymouth to test our Golf skills. It was a best ball event and the winning team of Jeanette Ek, Art Fulkerson, Bob Oleszkiewicz and Bob’s son in law Ray are the champions for 2006. Mark Campagnoli had the men’s longest drive and was also closest to the pin, Jeanette Ek had the women’s longest drive. It was a hot afternoon of fun and good times. Look forward to seeing a larger group next year.

July 30th

Passport Tour # 4 goes Irish.  On a really hot afternoon of July 30th 9 Vettes met in the parking lot of Hawthorne Valley  Country Club to cruise ( mostly via Hines Dr.) to Livonia for the July Passport tour. Two more Vettes joined the others once we parked at the Claddagh Irish Pub. An even 20 people gathered around a very long table to enjoy the Irish fare—fish and chips, shepherd’s pie, Irish Stew and more—to enjoy each others company. Instead of a people’s choice award we, two door prizes were raffled off just for fun, Winners were Diane Watson and Jim McLaughlin.

            All of us agreed that the Claddagh was a great choice for our gathering, whether or not is was our first time there. It was an enjoyable dinning and social experience because of its pleasant atmosphere--- particularly the temperature since when we went in to the pub it was 94 outside, however when we walked out later it was 20 degrees cooler and rain showers. Bad news: clean vette didn’t like it, but the good news, the cooler air sure felt wonderful.

August 6th

On Sunday, August 6, 14 Model “A” and 9 Corvettes met in parking lot of the Outback steakhouse in Livonia for the 2nd Annual Metal and Plastic Mixer.  CCM and the Motor Cities Region Model A Restorer’s enjoyed comparing the old and the new as voted on each others cars for a our People’s Choice Awards. Announced during dinner, the winners were Mark Browns Model A and Bob and Linda Johnsen C4 white coupe. Door prize winners Betty Alles from the Model A club and Roger Nosworthy – CCm each won a special door prize..

            After dinner the Model A’s led the parade( the Vettes patiently followed) to Ritter Frozen Custard on 8 Mile for desert. This was another chance to intermingle and to look over the different cars once more. The weather as a bit warm, but not as hot as predicted, so were all thankful for a really perfect day with great cars and friends.

July 2006

Our Annual Dinner Cruise was a great success. Thanks to all who cruised and those that met us at the Common Grill for an excellent meal and birthday celebration. We started our cruise with a "People’s Choice" that was won by Don and Donna Wertz in their very nice looking new Red Z06. A special award to Ted Godett for having a little dust on his car.  A caravan of 15 cars started in Plymouth and headed out on North Territorial toward Chelsea. It was an enjoyable drive through the country side as the weather was very good. Upon arriving at the Common Grill we settled in for great meal and a surprise birthday celebration for Ken Watson as he was greeted by his family and friends. A great time for all.

June 2006

The 2nd Passport Tour recap. ShoGun Japanese Restaurant was the Passport Tour destination for the May 20, 2006 dinner. Around 25 members and guests enjoyed watching the chefs create volcanoes out of onions, which flamed and smoked and tails of shrimp fly into the chef’s shirt pocket. Eleven cars met at the starting point and took a drive to the restaurant in caravan. Too bad the guy with the old beat up truck didn’t figure out he was holding up the parade until Jim zoomed up and got him out of the way. Nina and Ray won the People's Choice Award with their 1963 Split back. Thanks to Carol for leading this Passport Tour.

May 2006

The 1st Passport Tour to Los Galanas was a Hot Tamale. We had 10 Corvettes lined up and ready to cruise. Our people’s choice awards for this tour went to: Second Place, Carol Glowacki in her very nice Blue 02 convertible and taking top honors was Ken and Diane Watson in their classic Blue 67 convertible, which goes to show that all Corvettes are not red. Congrats. Cruising from Les Stanford down Michigan Ave to Mexican Village we encountered a few (a lot of) puddles. Seems that the City of Detroit was doing some plumbing work on the fire hydrants along the route. Still up for discussion was the red light in Dearborn with Mary and Ken side by side waiting for Green. It looked even to me. We met some friends at Los Golanas and all enjoyed a great meal and time.

Our tour to the GM Powertrain Assembly facility was a great success. Thanks to Dave Krom for setting this up and booking the additional tour due to the overflow from this sign up. We had the opportunity to see first hand the construction of the beast that powers the Z06. This is an assembly facility no parts are mfg. here, so this was a very clean and quiet place. Our tour guide was one of the assemblers and was a member of CCM awhile back. Still has his Vette. As we walked along the engine path "q and a" was the norm. Had the opportunity to inspect and handle many of the components. It was very interesting to view the latest technology and very high tech operation. The tour concluded with a short power test before the engine is shipped to another facility for further testing and actual placement in the chassis. We then cruised to Bakers for dinner before heading to our membership meeting. Thanks again to Dave.

In last month’s SlipStream I mentioned that the Corvette Legends Tuesday cruise in at the Central City Diner in Canton is on the 3rd Tuesday. Correction it is the 2nd Tuesday of the month.

Come out and tune up your racing skills at Kart to Kart, with a preseason start to the Autocross events. The go carts are evenly matched, so skill will determine results. Kart to Kart is located in Sterling Heights  on Van Dyke just south of 19 mile rd, on the west side of the street. See you there. Come out and watch if you don’t wish to race.

We need volunteers for our Autocross dates; even if you don’t race you can earn worker points and be involved.  Check the competition schedule for dates.

Still to put on the calendar are a Golf Outing and fun night out in mid week during the summer.

I would like input as to locations North, Eastside, Westside and Downriver to where we can meet on a monthly basis - kind of a "show up and cruise to" place. If you know of a good place, Dairy Queens or Drive Ins where we can gather let me know. I would like to publish a list in April's Slipstream to start in May. Suggested times would be:

1st  Sunday of the month - NORTH
2nd Saturday of the month - DOWNRIVER
3rd  Saturday of  the month - EASTSIDE
4th Saturday of  the month - WESTSIDE

These would just be a show up event, just a place to gather and do some bench racing. Look for locations next month.

March 2006

The Annual Banquet for 2005 was a festive celebration of Corvette camaraderie. If you missed it, mark your calendar for Jan 20th 2007 for the next banquet.

We have planned many events for the upcoming year. First event:

  March 25th       Kart to Kart                             11am

Its time to tune those racing skills and competitive drive as we start with pre season racing.  No sign up, just be ready to race.

Joe Thomas was planning to lead a caravan to the museum in April for the Bash.  He has had a work commitment come up and cannot attend. If interested in attending contact Joe or Dave Krom.  Dave will already be at the museum earlier in the week. They both have details on rooms and activities. See flyer in SlipStream.

We have progressed  from our Slider Drives to the Le Tour De Vette Deli Cruises – now is the time to take you around the World as we plan our Passport Tour. We will be going to various ethnic restaurants in the metro area.  Passports will be available, get them stamped for entrance to them. The dates have been set, just need to confirm locations, times. Updates in next issue and on web site. Mark your calendar for the following dates. These will be early evening or mid-afternoon cruises.

 April 29th   Sat                                 Aug 27th   Sun
May 20th     Sat                                 Sept 17th   Sun
June 25th     Sun                               Oct 28th     Sat
July 30th      Sun

On June 3rd  ACI in Toledo will be hosting an Open House with a Show Shine car show.  Check their web site www.acivette.com for more details and location.

July 16 is an important date as we will be joining the Mustang  Club of Michigan for a combined cruise and dinner. We will be cruising through Ed. Hines Dr. to the Deadwood Bar and Grill in Northville. This is a BOWTIE vs. blue oval event. Our last encounter with the blue oval (Model A Club) we were out numbered in vehicles, but we held the upper hand in horsepower.

I like to plan a golf outing if there is interest, contact Kerry asap so that we can get this on our schedule.

For those that don’t have the full golf game, we’d like to do a mid week fun event at a miniature golf course. Again contact Kerry with level of interest.

Best way to contact Kerry 734 502 7103c, 734 414 0732h or any CCM officer or board member.

November 2005

Mark your calendar for the  47th Annual Awards Banquet on January 28th 2006. Flyer page in Slipstream with all of the details. Look forward to seeing everyone there.

The schedule is being finalized with our planned "Around the World" Tour for next year. We’ll start in February with monthly cruise and meet at different ethnic restaurants in the area. If you know of and have a favorite let me know.

Other planned activities for 2006:

We’ll have a trip to Kart to Kart in February or March.

BOWTIE vs BLUE OVAL

During the summer we are planning a cruise night with the Mustang Club of Michigan. Details are being worked out. This should be a great event as two classics get together.

Thanks to all that helped with our Le Tour de Vette Deli Tours this year. Look forward to a great cruising season next year.

October 2005

The Breadbasket Deli/Model A cruise offered up the chance to check out the modern and the very old. The Model A’s outnumbered the vettes nine to four but the total horsepower of the Model A’s didn’t equal that of the vettes. After enjoying   huge sandwich portions, we were preparing to cruise to Ritters Ice Cream for dessert, one of the Model A’s would not start. It took about 30 minutes for the team of owners to have this car up and running. They come prepared with additional parts and equipment to make necessary repairs along the road. Talk about an open engine compartment. After testing and replacing the distributor, checking the electrical system it was time to roll. At Ritters it looked like old vs. new, as the cars lined up. We voted on each others cars for best of show. The car of Bill and Paula Gattis-1930 Deluxe Roadster – Kerry and Denise Hlady-1966 Convertible were the winners. Stay tuned for updates for a Bowtie and Blue Oval gathering Vettes vs. Mustangs in 2006. Thanks to Mark and Kaye Campagnoli for coordinating the Model A’s.

Our evening at the GM Heritage Museum had a decent turnout of about 45 people. We were given a brief overview of the facility. They had close to 200 cars inside from the common to the very rare, some concept vehicles like the three Firebirds which don’t look like the Firebird we know today. The cars change weekly with about 50 or so staying put. This helps keep the collection fresh and with new additions you don’t know what you are going to see. If you missed this year’s event, we’ll look to do it again next year.

The Dinner Cruise to Aleko’s was an enjoyable drive through the country side. Add a little rain in Farmington Hills which didn’t dampen the spirit of the 12 vettes that made the journey. They were joined at the resturauant by a couple more vettes for an excellent meal. Thanks to Tom Kania for leading this cruise.

We finished the Deli Cruises season this year the same way we had started by meeting at Les Stanford and cruising to our location. Lile’s Ham Sandwich in Dearborn was our destination as we wrap up the Deli scene. Frank and Lynn Massucci 05 and Darren Humphries 02 won best of cruise. Congrats to both.

Check the web site for photos of the Cruises and GM Heritage Museum.

As mentioned last month we’d like to take you around the world to experience the best the area has. If you have a favorite ethnic restaurant that you think is the best let me know so that we can add to the list.  We are planning to do one a month starting in January, during the winter months- we will meet at the resturauant – nicer months cruise to locations. Have heard from a few members with ideas, keep them coming. Kerry 734 502 7103c

September 2005

The Dreamcruise was a busy weekend of activities. Overall a successful event with a few interruptions with the weather. We were busy a couple of times drying off the cars on Friday and Saturday.  Ray and Nina Gonzales '64 red coupe took "Best of Show Honors". Al Nagy’s '03 Anniversary Red Convertible was chosen as the "Tennis and Golf Company’s Host Award". Congrats to both as these were great examples of old and new.

The site, food, great cars and the opportunity to cruise was enjoyed by all. We had some long distance members attend Dr. Bruce Rowland from Ky., Joe Thomas and Jennifer Everhart from Okemos. Look forward to seeing everyone at next year’s event.

August 2005

The past couple of weeks have been filled with activities. Cruises, competition and the picnic have kept us very busy. The picnic was a great success - great food, plenty of cars, games for kids and just hanging out with friends talking about Vettes. Thanks to the Jutras' and Watson's for organizing and ordering great weather.

We just completed two Le tour de Vette deli cruises:

The Stage Deli in West Bloomfield offered up a complete menu, and very large portions. We then cruised to the Dairy Queen in Keego Harbor for some Blizzards and sundaes. Awards for people choice were handed out to Ted & Laura Hou, there is something about red cars, and Frank and Lynn Massucci, this time they brought their very new 05. Congrats to both.

Ridley Deli in Troy was our next tour stop and they offered a diverse menu, not like a regular deli, breads and pastries in abundance. From here we cruised to the Dairy Queen in Rochester for cones and sundaes. Carol Glowacki in 02 Blue convertible was best of the cruise. Congrats.

Coming up in Sept. we've got some excellent events planned.

Sept 17 Alekos Dinner Cruise to Hamburg.

Sept 24 Bread Basket Deli with the Motor Cities Model A Club, Livonia

Sept 27 GM Heritage Museum, Warren

Sept 28 General Meeting at Werner Meier Master Work Shop Madison Heights

Planning for next year's social cruises, we like to take everyone around the world. So check to see if your passport is current as we cruise to dine at your favorite ethnic restaurants in the area. Each month we will cruise to a different nationally. Your input of your favorite restaurant is needed. Email or phone call or see at meetings. These will start in January 06 , evening dinners, Fri., Sat. Sun.

JULY 2005

The calendar has been full with activities both social and competition within CCM and all of the cruise events around. It’s nice to see increased participation. Follow-up from past cruise events.

From Mark Eissler who led the Return to Yesterday’s Collection:

We had been eagerly awaiting the return of spring, as April had been cold and wet.  The gently warm days with the cooling breezes, the low humidity and the warming sunshine.  Ahh, May.  None of these things were available to us as we met on Sunday May 1st for the Return to Yesterday Sundae Drive.  What the heck!?  It was cold and it threatened to rain.  We gathered at Noon in the parking lot of the Standard Federal Bank at 5 Mile and Beck Roads in Plymouth and shivered in the breeze as we chatted together and waited for our fellow Club members to arrive.  Many of us retreated to our cars to get out of the cold.  Some of us ventured across the street to the Shell station or to McDonald’s to pass the time.  Finally, at the appointed time, our cruise director called us out of our Corvettes for the Driver’s Meeting.  After that, we lined up and headed off for a nice cruise and the ice cream in Ann Arbor.

Our drive to Yesterday’s Collection was about 1 hour and 30 minutes because we did not use M-14 (the most direct route). After all, we wanted an enjoyable drive in the countryside, not a blitz down the freeway!  We left Plymouth heading west on North Territorial.  We crossed Pontiac Trail, and then further on, US 23.  Continuing west on North Territorial past the Metropark and lakes area where the road gets nice and curvy, until it ended at M-52.  There, we turned south and drove through beautiful downtown Chelsea.  Anyone looking for a great meal at a cozy restaurant will want to frequent the Common Grill right there in downtown Chelsea.  (If you’re lucky, you might see Jeff Daniels walk in as you are finishing your coffee.)

Continuing south on M-52 out of downtown Chelsea, we crossed I-94, and drove through rolling farmland until we reached Scio-Church Road.  Here we turned left, heading east toward our goal.  At Zeeb Road we turned north and traveled to Jackson Road.  Making a “Michigan left” onto Jackson Road, we were delivered to Yesterday’s Collection in good order.  Once inside we were amazed at the selection of automotive memorabilia, model cars, books, posters and other collectibles available for our perusal and purchase.  And then there was the full service soda fountain in the ice cream parlor!  Banana Splits and Hot Fudge Sundaes were just some of the creations served up by the friendly staff behind the counter. Our return to Yesterdays was a great combination of seeing our fellow Club Members, cruising on some great roads, eating tasty ice cream treats and visiting with old friends.  It may have been cold outside, but we were warmed by our common bonds, a love for Corvettes and a love for ice cream!  We left Yesterday’s Collection, looking forward to the day we return again.

From Mike Cohen, leader of the Cruise for Food:

Our June Membership Meeting, "The Food Cruise" was a great time. There were 12 cars total, 11 of which were Corvettes, departing from Royal Oak on a trip to Harrison Township and Eddy's Drive-In. There we met up with members from the east side and we totaled 14 Vettes. It just so happened there was a cruise event in St. Clair Shores going on that night, so there were many hot rods and classics at the drive-in along with the Vettes. We departed Eddy's for a trip to Mastros Ice Cream for some yummy Stroh’s ice cream and there we were - right in the middle of a cool cruise event. We all stayed till close to dark, eating ice cream and lookin’ at cool cars.

Cruise to the Copper Pickle: led by Tom and Bridget

We held a people’s choice contest, and Jim and Ellen McLaughlin’s ‘67 big block walked away with the honors. 9 cars were ready to roll. The day was hot and the sky blue, a great day for a cruise as we headed out from Northville on Seven Mile to D-19. Heading North to Howell we enjoyed the many sites and views of the countryside on this 40+ mile drive to the Copper Pickle. After enjoying a bowl of dill pickle soup and a sandwich we departed to Ritter’s Ice Cream in Brighton, where we met up with fellow CCM members on the way home from auto crossing.  Soup, sandwich, ice cream and friends and great way to spend an afternoon. It’s nice to too see more of you at these events.

Thanks to Mark, Mike, Tom & Bridget for leading these drives.

From Robert House and his trip south to the races at Mid Ohio: All Corvette drivers were treated like royalty. The combination of Corvette Corral, talk about the C6 Z06 by David Hill, opportunity to drive the course behind the Corvette pace car, and the pit pass (good for all the time except immediately before and during races). I wasn't sure I should go to the races Sunday, since I more than got my money's worth on Saturday! It certainly made me proud to be part of the Corvette team to be able to talk about Corvette with such friendly people as David Hill and the Corvette drivers. Oh yeah, there was an ALMS race, too. Corvette C6R's first and second in GT-1.

On Saturday, 25 September, the Club visited with our friends at Yesterday’s Collection in Ann Arbor. We met in the parking lot of Standard Federal Bank at 5 Mile and Beck in Plymouth. We had 10 cars in our group, ranging from Zippy’s (and Mrs. Zippy’s) brand new C6 to Ken and Diane Watson’s beautiful ’67 roadster. Mark Eissler was our cruise leader for the day.

Our drive to Yesterday’s Collection was about 1 hour and 30 minutes because we did not use M-14 (the most direct route). After all, we wanted an enjoyable drive in the countryside, not a blitz down the freeway! We left Plymouth heading west on North Territorial. We crossed Pontiac Trail, and US 23. Continuing west on North Territorial past the Metro park and lakes area where the road gets nice and curvy, until it ended at M-52. There, we turned south and drove through beautiful downtown Chelsea. Crossing I-94, we continued south through farmland until we reached Scio-Church Road.

And then was the full service soda fountain in the ice cream parlor!  Banana Splits and Hot Fudge Sundaes were just some of the creations served up by the friendly staff behind the counter. Our return to Yesterday was great combination of seeing our fellow Club Members, cruising on some great roads, eating tasty ice cream treats and visiting with old friends.  We left Yesterday’s Collection, looking forward to the day we return again. Thanks to Mark for chairing this cruise.

Any ideas, events or happenings let me so that we work on the calendar for next year. Kerry 734-502-7103 c,  734-414-0732 h.

The Annual Picnic was a tremendous success. The committee arranged for great weather. Thank you to the Jutras’s and the Watson’s for organizing a gala event. Bob Jutras again did a great job of handling the barbeque, Jim Farless had a huge turnout for the Concurs, and awards will be presented at the next membership meeting. Thanks for the judges whom volunteered there time.  A great time all kids and family’s, look to you at next year’s picnic.

The Dreamcruise had great weather for Saturday; Friday evening was a little damp for awhile. We had a successful turnout not only for CCM but the event itself.  Goodie bags and Door Prizes were awarded to all. We had guests this year from around the USA; Dave Krom's brother came in from Anchorage. Bob Philaj’s son came in from Denver and a long distance member Kentucky - Bruce Rowland. We truly had an American event. From the burning rubber to the aroma of the grill and the smoked food we had a great time. Thanks go to Meguiar’s, Stoner Cleaners, Hemmings,  Sunset Sportswear, and Sazerac – Mark Schorer who donated items for our event. A special thanks go to Denise Hlady for her cookies, to Cathy Cohen for her macaroni salad and to Paul Woolner who made the hang tags and art work. We enjoyed a day of sun, great food and best of all hanging out with members and enjoying the view.

Our people’s choice award this year goes to Dennis Sierens with his very clean and nicely appointed Z06. Dave, owner of the Tennis and Golf Company picked the coupe of Jennifer Everhart and Joe Thomas as his choice as vendor award. We had a sold out lot with 30 cars. Thanks to all who came and enjoyed our lot. Look forward to seeing all of you next year for another exciting Dreamcruise.

Two big events have passed in June - the National Convention which I heard was a smashing success and our annual cruise for food – The Cruise to Bakers  in which we had one of our larger turnouts for this event. Great food, discussions and cruising. Everyone had a great time. At the Plymouth Fish Market Dinner Cruise, Mike Cowan won the people's choice award with his 1980 Yellow Coupe. Dave Krom also picked up some additional cleaning materials as he came in second. We then enjoyed a drive to Northville for dessert.

SOCIAL - CRUISE UPDATES

In this month’s issue is a cruise night/day page of local bars – restaurants that hold events. I know of only one Vette only place and that is at the Central City Dinner in Canton on Canton Center Rd. on the second Tuesday of the month. Would be nice to fill the lot with CCM members. If you know of a place and it is not listed let me know so that we can get it included on the page.

The Brunch at the Fox and Hounds Inn had a slim turnout - the weather was rainy and very cool which led to poor showing. Ken and Diane Watson won the people’s choice award for his ‘67 blue Vette.

It’s time to be thinking of pulling back that cover on the car and get in shape (wax on/wax off) for the upcoming season of activities. I’ve compiled a list of activities that are planned for this year. If you have suggestions or ideas for locations or an event please contact me and we’ll get them on the calendar.

 As the car show schedule develops we will have a chart of the local car events that are held weekly. If you know of any local establishments that are planning on holding weekly or monthly cruise nights, forward that info to me so that I can get on our chart.

 The club has many other opportunities in which you can  (be sociable ) cruise to, to observe, to volunteer your time to help run events (we always looking for assistance at events the more help we have the smoother they run) and you might find yourself participating. This is an excellent way to be involved in the club and to meet new people. You may choose to attend the many autocross and drag events that CCM Hosts. What a great way to spend a few hours  enjoying  watching our fellow club members navigating a road course and improving their times as well as their skills..

 In March we’re planning to go to Kart to Kart. I need to know the level of interest and those that are planning to attend. It’s at 3pm, and the cost is around $ 50 for three sessions. If you would like to attend to brush up on your driving skills, learn new techniques or just come on out and have some fun. I need to have the number attending by March 10, so please let me know.

 Joe Thomas is leading a group to attend the C5-C6 Birthday Bash in Bowling Green, Ky. April 21.  What a great way to celebrate this event by attending, touring the museum and participating in the many events that they have planned to conduct.

 Coming up in July in Windsor, Ontario is the NCRS National Convention. I am looking for someone to lead a group over. This is a fantastic opportunity to learn more about your car, restoration techniques and car care in general. The location is close to use just across the river.

 The Slider Drives – Cruise together from a central location or on your own. Then we will continue on for ice cream or desert. If you know of a famous or not so famous eatery that you think we’d enjoy going to let’s get it on the calendar and see which restaurant has the best slider.

  The Brunch Drive to the Fox & Hound Inn located in Bloomfield Hills, 10am brunch then we’ll take a cruise around some of the surrounding lakes in the local area. A very nice way to start your Sunday. The cost would be around 15-20 per person. More details to follow.

 At this time I am waiting to hear back from the Golf Course with the cost and times.

 I am looking for people to join the social committee to assist with the many events we’ve planned for this year. Look me up at the meetings or give me a call.

June 2003

The April Sundae Drive to Yesterday’s Collection was a great success! With the spring weather finally here, we met at the Home Depot in Plymouth and hung around their parking lot until departure time. There were about 25 Corvettes that gathered for the caravan out to Ann Arbor.  For a while it looked like we were holding a Monthly Meeting right there.  In fact, there were so many Corvettes in the parking lot that the manager of the store came out and asked what was going on.  After a brief driver’s meeting, we all lined up on the exit road and “headed out on the highway”.

The drive was mostly freeway and in about 25 minutes we had arrived at our destination: Yesterday’s Collection.  Inside we were greeted by the owner and the friendly staff.  Some of us headed straight to the ice cream counter to enjoy those sundaes and other treats.  Others browsed the shelves stocked with Corvette and other car merchandise. Even Dave Krom joined us on his way back from the C5 weekend at the National Corvette Museum.  I was enjoying my hot fudge sundae (small, made with 3 scoops of ice cream, yikes!!) with the Ek’s when the Jackson chapter of the Model T club arrived.  They brought six T’s with them.  Meanwhile, our Members were all over Yesterday’s.  We toured the auto museum behind the ice cream counter.  Suzanne Lees was out in front with the hood to her ’82 Collector’s Edition open.  Ted Godett was conducting an inspection of the engine bay.  Jonelle Flannery was showing off her new exhaust pipes by “rapping” them for us.  Mary Wentzel had 3 generations of her family with her.  The Parents and the Firments were in deep conversation.  Slowly, as folks finished their ice cream and completed their shopping, they headed out for home or wherever their Corvette was going to take them. I slipped behind the wheel of my Corvette, brought the engine to life and pointed the nose east. We’ll return to Yesterday’s Collection and when we do, I hope you’ll join us.

Upcoming Social Events:

June 7.  The Corvette Encounter, Saturday, June 7, at Les Stanford Chevrolet in Dearborn, Mi.  this is our “Really Big Show”, so shine ‘em up and bring ’em out.

June 27, 28, 29.  The Corvette 50th Anniversary Celebration in Nashville, TN.  Cruise to the Corvette event of a lifetime with Corvette Club of Michigan.  See Dave Krom for all the details.

May 2003

All right, I was wrong!!  Very wrong.  In last month's column, I had hoped for the last of winter’s weather.  That hope, as we all know, was shattered by the icy return of freezing rain and 4 or more inches of snow.  I hope all of you are reading this by the light of incandescent bulb and not by candle light.

Well, we did it.  About 20 Members of Corvette Club of Michigan came out to Dave and Buster’s in Utica for our Social Season Opener.  Joining us were Ken and Diane Watson, Bruce and Mary Wentzel along with granddaughter Crystal, Dyan and Dave Janowitz, Carole Koneig, Gary Westrick and Cindy, Jan Skiles, Paul Woolner and his son Chase, Dave Krom, Bob and Pat Jutras, Carl and Carolyn Polomski, and Pam Dansbury.  We had good food and great visits, then we got down to business on the video racing games.  Everybody had a great time.

Coming up yet in April CCM will caravan out to Ann Arbor on a Sundae Drive to Yesterday’s Collection.  Hopefully this year we will have warmer weather to enjoy our drive and make the ice cream taste better.  There is a flier in this issue of SlipStream.  The date is April 27; the time to meet is 1:30 PM.  The assembly point will be the Home Depot parking lot at the corner of 5 Mile and Beck.  We will drive out to Ann Arbor as a caravan!  Caravaning with a group of Corvettes is always a fun thing to do.  I still love the looks we get from other drivers as a Corvette caravan drives by.  I am looking forward to a Hot Fudge Sundae at the end of this caravan!  Won’t you join us?

Upcoming Social Events:

April 27.   The Sundae Drive returns.  Cruise to Yesterdays Collection on Jackson Road in Ann Arbor.

As I write this, the Detroit area has just been blasted by what will hopefully be the final icy blast of the 2002 / 2003 winter!  It seems hard to believe that in just 2 weeks we will hold our annual Driver’s School for our incoming group of rookie autocrossers.  So, to sharpen our stagnated driving skills, it is time for the Corvette Club of Michigan “Season Kick-off” gathering. We’re heading back to Dave & Buster’s in Utica and their “Million Dollar Midway”. It’ll be on Saturday 22 March at 2:00 PM. Be sure to bring your (virtual) driving skills and wads of cash to test the mettle of your fellow Club Members on the linked NASCAR racing games.  Look for the flier in this month's issue of SlipStream for all the “racy” details.

Mark Eissler, Social Director

Woodward Dream Cruise! A very heartfelt "Thank You!" to Kerry Hlady and Paul Woolner for the great job they did organizing our day at the Dream Cruise! We had front row seats to the greatest car enthusiast event in Michigan. We enjoyed reserved parking for our Corvettes, space for our lawn chairs under a tent to keep us out of the sun, and unobstructed views of all the great cars that braved the bumper to bumper crawl that was the Dream Cruise.

As soon as I pulled into the lot, a huge goodie bag was handed to me through the window. I swear it weighed 20 pounds! As promised, we could leave the lot when we wanted to join in the cruising, and return to our spots afterward. Others of us just hoofed it to the shuttle buses and rode along on the free transportation. Dave of the Tennis and Golf Company really made us feel at home, too. While we relaxed on the lawn watching the spectacle, he was busy running the gas grill cooking our food. There was a choice of Italian sausage, hot dogs, hamburgers and chicken breast sandwiches. There were beverages and desserts to enjoy, too. Somehow, Kerry conned his wife into making brownies for us. They were great! Oh, we even got door prizes too! Kerry was collecting some really great free stuff for us throughout the past year, just to make our Dream Cruise that much better. I almost needed a trailer to bring all my goodies home! Everybody had a great time. I can’t wait until next year so we can do it again!

Our Social Calendar is winding down. As you can see, we have whittled down the list of Social Events remaining for 2002. Your next opportunity to gather with us and go cruising is on Sunday 13 October. Cher Ketelhut is taking us on an "Octoberfest Cruise" to Frankenmuth! Our starting point will be the 3M Building on Victor Parkway in Livonia. 3M is just north of the Rio Bravo Restaurant in Livonia at 7 Mile and I-275. Victor Parkway is the first traffic light east of I-275. It’s real easy to get there and the 3M Building is very easy to find. Meet up at 11:00 AM. We will have short driver’s meeting at 11:10 AM and then we’re on the road at 11:15! A Chicken Dinner is the usual staple at the Bavarian Inn (our lunch destination). We’ll be eating together, but after dinner, you are free to "do" Frankenmuth according to your whims. Individual departure from Frankenmuth after dinner and shopping. We moved this cruise into October so we hope the weather will be a little warmer than the last time we went to Frankenmuth. Oh, Cher says Corvettes are optional in case you have already put your car away for the winter. Be sure to reserve your spot on this cruise by calling Cher (her number is in the Member Directory or on the flier in this Month's SlipStream) with the number in your party. We do owe the restaurant a head count of our group so they plan for us. I hope you will join us.

Upcoming CCM Social Events:

October 13: Cruise to Frankenmuth. Sunday. Check SlipStream for the Event Flier. Cher Ketelhut will be leading us to the town where there’s always a Chicken Dinner. Please make plans to join us!

December: Remember, NO General Membership Meeting in December.

January 11, 2003: Annual CCM Awards Banquet and Dinner Dance. Laurel Manor, Livonia. Awesome food, awesome awards, awesome celebrity guest(s), awesome fun.

Annual CCM Family Picnic, Sunday 04 August. Our Club Picnic at Maybury State Park, was a great success!  Thanks to Pat Jutras, Picnic Chairperson and her army of enthusiastic helpers, we all had a great day.  Our thanks go out to Tom Kania for getting the beverages, Bob Jutras for chasing ice and for cooking over the hot coals, Kaye and Glenn Simms and Ken and Diane Watson for all their help.  And thanks to Jim and Debbie from Dundee for shucking the corn (and for helping to eat it, too!).  Thank you Chris and Bret Watson for going on that ice run for us.  And thanks to all of you who came to the picnic with your “dish to pass”.  I enjoyed many eats and sweets.  It looked like the kids had a great time too.  After covering themselves in birdseed in search of coins, they participated in a staggering array of games and made off with a cache of prizes.  Ken Watson coordinated the tricycle autocross for the kids.  And he left his 1967 Corvette convertible at home just in case I was really serious about having the kids disassemble it as part of the day’s activities!  I think everyone had fun.  It was great to see all the clean Corvettes from the morning’s concourse.  I got to catch up with Keith and Kathy Tappen, talk to Jim Farless, meet Dave Krom’s daughters and grandchildren, see Kaye and Glenn Simms (who’ve been too long absent from our gatherings), get chided by Paula and Art Fulkerson to help out more, watch Marty and John Firment run for FTD on the egg-autocross circuit, talk about drag cars with Dewey Burton, enjoy the 3-legged races, discuss upcoming vacations with Rick and Diane Parent, chat with Jan and Marge Millen, notice that Nikki Ketlehut had grown about a foot since the last time we saw her and generally, really enjoy the day!  I hope your picnic was as much fun as mine was.  I can’t wait until next year’s picnic.

Woodward Dream Cruise!  16 and 17 August.  By the time you read this, we will have enjoyed our gathering at the 8th Dream Cruise.  Kerry Hlady and Paul Woolner put their heads together and what resulted was a blast!  Check in next month for a full report.

Fall Brunch Cruise, Sunday 15 September.

We interrupt this Event description to bring you this important information.  Please do not wait until the last minute to sign up for this event.  Please do not arrive at the assembly point on the 15th with your check in hand expecting to register before we leave.  There will not be enough time for the cruise to leave on schedule if 50 people show up expecting to hand me their event fee before the departure.  We are asking you to pre-register and prepay for the sake of convenience, both yours and mine.  Thank you, we now return you to your regularly scheduled Event announcement.***

June Cruise Night  About 45 Members of Corvette Club of Michigan braved the threatening weather and the absolutely horrible traffic to have a really good time at the Annual Cruise Night!  I left my house with every intention of being at the meeting point to welcome the 1st to arrive.  As it turned out, I was the last to arrive!  Rain fell on my previously clean Corvette while I crept through traffic snarled by the rain and an accident.  But what a pay off for those that did attend!  The skies cleared, the humidity lifted and we were blessed with a picture perfect evening.  The cruise left the Meijer’s lot heading west on Grand River.  We paraded through New Hudson on our way out to Kensington Road.  We took Kensington north to the west entrance of Kensington Metro Park.  Once in the Park, the Cruise slowed to the Park speed limit, letting us enjoy the beauty of the Park.  We took the north route around the Lake and turned onto the drive that would take us out to the flag pole.  As we rounded the flag pole, each cruiser got the chance to see and wave to all the other Corvettes on the Cruise.  We exited the Park at Milford Road and turned into Baker’s of Milford parking lot.  As promised, the car crazy staff of Baker’s of Milford had our special Corvette Corral parking area waiting for us.  We sat at the outdoor tables along the south side of the building.  Some members of CCM elected to meet us at Baker’s, so they were already there.  The rest of the evening was spent enjoying the company of our fellow CCM Members, good food and cold beverages.  The skies remained clear while we dined and the sunset was beautiful.  In fact, it was such a treat of an evening that I did something I rarely do.  I took the top out of my Corvette and drove home enjoying the open air.  Chalk up another great June Cruise Night for us.  I hope you will join us on our next Cruise in July along Hines Drive.

The Hines Drive Cruise, Sunday 21 July.  Jan Skiles is our Cruise Director for this fun Sunday afternoon of cruise’n on Hines Drive and eat’n in Northville.  She has picked out our starting point near the east end of Hines Drive and selected our destination, Deadwood Bad and Grill, near the west end of the Drive in Northville.   So please plan on joining your fellow Club members on this fun drive through Hines Park.  Look for the event flier in this issue of SlipStream.

Annual CCM Family Picnic, Sunday 04 August. Our Club Picnic will be at Maybury State Park, Walnut Shelter, on Eight Mile Road on the west side of Northville.  Our Competion Committee will be conducting the CCM Concourse earlier in day, so there will be some very clean Corvettes to enjoy.  As usual, with an event this big and this important, we need your help to pull it off.  Pat Jutras will be our Picnic Chairperson.  We will need help with set-up, cooking, and tear down.  Board Member Tom Kania has agreed to get the beverages to the picnic.  But we really need help planning and conducting children’s activities and games in the mid-afternoon.  If you plan to bring your children to the picnic and you have some fun children’s activities in mind, please consider helping with this fun part of our Family Day.  Contact Mark Eissler, CCM Social Director or Pat Jutras, Picnic Chair if you can help.

Woodward Dream Cruise!  16 and 17 August.  This may be your last chance to get in on the fun!  We have 23 of 25 slots spoken for already!  With help from Board Representative Kerry Hlady, Corvette Club of Michigan has made arrangements with the Tennis and Golf Company on Woodward Avenue south of 13 Mile Road to borrow some of their parking lot.  The event entry fee gets you Friday evening and Saturday fun, including reserved parking on Woodward Friday evening for those “pre-cruise” activities from 6 PM until ?  You can cruise into and out of the lot as much as you want.  You will get food and soft drinks prepared by our hosts (and access to a port-a-potty).  Then, you get to come back for the Saturday Dream Cruise itself! Again, reserved parking with unlimited entry and exit from early on Saturday morning until ? Food and soft drinks (and port-a-potty access) again provided by our hosts.  Pre-registration and pre-payment of the entry fee are required to hold your spot for this unique opportunity.  See the flier in this issue of SlipStream for all the cool details.  And Kerry, thanks for setting this up for us!

Fall Brunch Cruise, Sunday 15 September.  We’re off to the St. Clair Inn again to partake of their fabulous Breakfast Buffet (with Omelet Station) and enjoy the scenic views of the St. Clair River from the English Room windows.  This year, to make it a more enjoyable restaurant experience, we are asking you to pre-register and prepay for the event.  This way you can enjoy the cruise to the Inn, your breakfast, conversation with your fellow CCM Members and you won’t have to worry about the bill!  You can leave when you’re ready on your schedule.  The price will include: Breakfast Buffet with Omelet Station, orange juice, coffee, sales tax and gratuity.  $13.57 per person ($27.14 per couple).  Look for the Fall Brunch Cruise registration form in this issue of SlipStream, fill it out and mail it with you check to the address on the bottom of the form.

The Sundae Drive.  On 21 April several of our hardier Club Members gathered at the Compuware Ice Arena on Beck Road in Plymouth in anticipation of our Sundae Drive to Yesterday’s Collection in Ann Arbor.  The weather wasn’t exactly ice cream weather.  Many of us jumped back into our heated Corvettes to avoid the shivers.  But the chilly weather was braved for as long as it took to conduct the Driver’s Meeting.  There was some consternation that maps were not provided to the group.  And there were even a few complaints about the quality of the verbal route instructions that were given.  Well, all I can say is, I knew exactly were I was going.  A straight shot west on M-14 to westbound I-94 to the Zeeb Road exit.  From there it was just a dash through the construction pylons to westbound Jackson Road.  About a quarter of a mile on we came to Yesterday’s Collection.  After performing the mandatory “Back-in Parking Maneuver” and watching the Corvette High Performance braking systems in action, we walked into the store.  My first impression was “Fantastic” and my eyes just about jumped out of their sockets as I gazed at row after row and aisle after aisle of car and bike and internal combustion engine driven stuff!  Die cast car models in a range of sizes and prices and types.  Tin signs.  Collectible and commemorative knives.  Neon signs.  Gas pump globes.  Elvis stuff, Betty Boop stuff, poster stuff, book stuff, hang on the wall stuff, set on the shelf stuff.  You name it they probably have it stuff!  I think I spent 45 minutes or more wandering the aisles and looking at everything.  And then it was time for the true test of Yesterday’s Collection’s reputation.  The ice cream sundae.  Hot fudge, please. Made with three scoops of vanilla, a sprinkle of nuts and a little whip cream.  It was great!  The hot fudge was thick and creamy.  The vanilla had that old fashioned, genuine vanilla bean flavor.  Laurie and I enjoyed our ice cream in the soda fountain area of the store.  We watched many of our fellow club members come in with their purchases and line up to order ice cream.  When our sundaes were finished, we realized that we had not yet seen all there was to see.  Behind the ice cream parlor was the museum.  There was a small selection of cars on display.  A brass era car, a ’61 Corvette and a couple of late 50’s passenger cars.  All of them looked to be in top-notch condition.  The display area was purposely painted to give the illusion of greater depth.  The back wall had 2 garage doors in it, but the wall and the doors were painted with a mural depicting a late 50’s or early 60’s repair shop.  It was very convincing and I enjoyed seeing it.  Having exhausted everything there was to look at and having stuffed ourselves with ice cream sundaes, it was time to head for home. Laurie and I said our good-byes and walked out into the light drizzle to our Corvette.  We drove home to the steady rhythm of the windshield wipers clearing the rain from our view.  It had been a very enjoyable afternoon.

June Cruise Night  The arrangements are finalized!  Please join us on Wednesday 26 June as Corvette Club of Michigan sets out on our annual Cruise Night.  Remember, this will take the place of our June General Membership Meeting.  So don’t go to Les Stanford Chevrolet on the 4th Wendesday of June, unless you want to buy a car!  We plan to cruise through some scenic Michigan countryside and Kennsington Metro Park to end up at Baker’s of Milford.  Here are some important points.  Due to construction on Grand River in Novi and generally increasing traffic congestion, the starting point for our Cruise is moved to the west.  We will meet in the west end of the parking lot for the Meijer store on Grand River just west of Wixom Road in Wixom.  To get there, take I-96 to the Wixom road exit.  Go south to Grand River.  Turn right (west) and go about a quarter mile to the traffic light at the entrance to the Meijer parking lot.  Turn right into the lot.  Look for us on your left in the west end of the lot.  Arrive at the starting point at 6:00 PM.  We want to start our cruise at 6:20 PM.  Kennsington Metro Park will charge each of us $2.00 / car to enter the Park, if the attendant is on duty!  So please be prepared to pay the attendant, if present, when you get to the booth.  The Park is beautiful and you may even discover a new spot to bring your family in the future.

Baker’s has arranged for special Corvette only parking in their lot.  And if the weather is clear, we will get to sit outside at the tables on the side of the building.  We can choose from 4 entrees prepared just for us and the beverage of your choice. (Hamburgers, hot dogs, grilled chicken and Italian sausage, if I remember my conversation with Mr. Baker correctly.)  And remember there is a Dairy Queen directly across Milford Road from Baker’s.  Pre-registration is not required for the Cruise Night, just join us at the assembly point.  I hope to see you there.

Annual CCM Family Picnic With the return of warm weather its not too early to be planning to attend our annual Family Picnic.  It will be on Sunday 4 August at Maybury State Park, Walnut Shelter, on Eight Mile Road on the west side of Northville.  Our Competion Committee will be conducting the CCM Concours earlier in day, so there will be some very clean Corvettes to enjoy.  As usual, with an event this big and this important, we need your help to pull it off.  Pat Jutras will be our Picnic Chairperson.  We will need help with set-up, cooking, and tear down. Otherwise, I’ll be bringing my wrenches and we’ll let the kids disassemble Ken Watson’s beautiful 1967, Concours winning Roadster.

Woodward Dream Cruise!  You asked for it and we got it! You will get food and soft drinks prepared by our hosts (and access to a port-a-pottie).  Then, you get to come back for the Saturday Dream Cruise itself! Ahh April! At last! March has thankfully gone out like a Lion/Lamb (it doesn’t mater, as long as it goes) and it couldn’t be too soon! Spring and blossoming Corvettes surround us. March was busy at Corvette Club of Michigan. Hang-on and follow along if you can.

The evening of March 2nd, NCCC Michigan Region Clubs and their members gather at the Double Tree Hotel in Novi for the 2001 NCCC Michigan Region Awards Banquet. The host club was America’s Corvette Club out of Broomfield Hills. We enjoyed fine food, good company and dancing. Corvette Club of Michigan was the top-scoring Club in Michigan Region in 2001. (Incidentally, we were the second highest scoring Club in the nation!) Congratulations to all of the winners! And thanks to all of our Club members who got out there last year and competed in or worked on NCCC sanctioned events. Your efforts counted and helped to make CCM a standout points scoring Club last year.

On March 23rd, we went to Dave & Buster’s in Utica and had a dandy time meeting and greeting our fellow members. The food was good, the drinks were cold and the video games were awesome! It is hard to describe the "Million Dollar Midway" if you haven’t been there. This place is huge! It is filled with Video and non-Video games. As full of games as it is, there is still room for a 40 foot, 2-sided, sit down bar in the middle. And there are booths and tables throughout the Midway. Well, we abused the NASCAR linked video games, as is our custom. Dave and Buster’s thoughtfully placed closed circuit TV cameras on each of these games to capture each contestant’s facial expressions as they raced! TV monitors were located on top of each game station for those in the room not racing to laugh at! What a great time we had!

So, what’s next? I’m glad you asked! Please plan on joining Corvette Club of Michigan on Sunday April 21st for a "Sundae Drive" to Yesterday’s Collection in Ann Arbor. They bill themselves as "Michigan’s largest retail source for automobile memorabilia". They have an automobile museum and they have an Ice Cream Parlor attached to their establishment! (Hence the name Sundae Drive, clever, huh?) Well, they also sell die cast model cars, tin signs and host car shows through the warm months. We will meet on the west of Plymouth at the Compuware Ice Arena and caravan out to Yesterday’s Collection as a group. Look for the event flier elsewhere in this issue of SlipStream. (If you live way out west, feel free to meet us Yesterday’s. See the event flier to plan your rendezvous time. Meanwhile, check out Yesterday’s Collection’s website: www.yesterdayscollection.com . Its (almost) March and that means time is drawing near for the Corvette Club of Michigan "Season Kick-off" gathering at a local watering hole. This year we’re going the East Side! We’re heading to Dave & Buster’s in Utica and their "Million Dollar Midway". It’ll be on Saturday 23 March this year so as not to interfere with the rain date for the Driver’s School. Be sure to bring your (virtual) driving skills and wads of cash to test the mettle of your fellow Club Members on the linked NASCAR racing games. If you tire of beating up on lesser drivers, you can try your skill at flying airplanes, driving a Taxi, piloting a Jet-ski or being a marksman. Look for the flier in this month's issue of SlipStream for the details.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It is my pleasure to address you as Social Director for your Club.  My aim for 2002 is to build on the groundwork we laid with our 2000 and 2001 Social Activities.  Today, the entire year lies before us.  Let me outline some of the Social Activities already planned.
In March look for the “Season Kick-off” gathering at a local watering hole. Traditionally, the Club has used restaurants that have exciting video games available in a game room. This year we plan to be on the East Side for our Season Kick-off.
In June we traditionally use our General Meeting as a Cruise Night.  We plan to do the same this year, too.
Our Club Picnic will be August 4th at Maybury State Park in Northville. We have reserved the Walnut Shelter for our use.  The Competition Committee has scheduled our annual Concourse event for that morning so picnic-goers will have the opportunity to see many really, really clean Corvettes. August also brings us the Woodward  Dream Cruise on the 17th.
Mark your calendars now for September 15th and the return of our annual Fall Brunch Cruise to St. Clair Inn. This has been a very popular get together for us and a chance to caravan our Corvettes along the shores of Lake St. Clair and the River to the historic Inn. Note that this date is one month earlier than past years.
On October 13th Corvette Club of Michigan will Cruise to Frankenmuth for a famous Chicken Dinner and then shopping in the town where it’s always Christmas.
Finally, Saturday, 11 January 2003 we will put on our finest threads for our Annual Awards Banquet and Dinner Dance to be held at the fabulous Laurel Manor in Livonia.
The events listed above are just the start of our opportunities to get together this coming year. “Watch this space” through the year to see what else develops.
A big Corvette Club of Michigan “Thank you” goes to Pat Jutras and her committee for the wonderful evening we enjoyed Saturday 05 January 2002 at our Awards Banquet and Dinner Dance.  We ate and celebrated at the Laurel Manor in Livonia. We enjoyed an open bar, a buffet dinner, a wonderful desert and dancing. Our special guests for the evening included Dave and Karen Hill, Dave and Glennda McLellen, and Russ Craighead of the Corvette platform team. Also with us from our sponsor, Les Stanford Chevrolet, were Scott Montgomery and Chris Warren and their escorts, Kerrie Montgomery and Colleen Adare.
Congratulations
to all of the Corvette Club of Michigan Class and Category champions whose accomplishments we celebrated that night.  After all, without them, we wouldn’t be able hold an Awards Banquet!
